One of Brisbane’s oldest shopping destinations is the heritage listed Brisbane Arcade in the Queen Street Mall.

Renowned for its upmarket, home grown retailers and award-winning designers, Brisbane Arcade is also fondly remembered for some unique stores. Over the years these included a traditional cake shop, an umbrella store and a delightful doily shop.

Brisbane Arcade property manager, Alison Pashley, said she believes the shopping galleria is popular due to the building’s old world charm and its mix of specialist retailers. “The Arcade has always been home to a range of quality stores you don’t find in other shopping centres,” she said.

“The timeless, heritage surroundings make Brisbane Arcade a special place to shop.”

Brisbane Arcade runs from the Queen Street Mall through to Adelaide Street. Its 50 retailers over three levels are mostly home-grown Brisbane businesses, showcasing local talent. It is home to some of the best and most awarded designers, manufacturers and buyers in the industry.

Many Brisbane Arcade retailers still design and manufacture their goods in workrooms located upstairs in the Arcade itself, a tradition that has been upheld since the Arcade was first established.

Brisbane Arcade was built in 1923 for well known philanthropists Dr James Mayne and his sister Miss Mary Emelia Mayne. After their deaths the Arcade was placed in a Trust and it is still run today in its original form with operating proceeds benefiting the University of Queensland Medical School and medical research.
